With programs from the MS Office suite, you can save your work in their native format, which makes it difficult for other users to open your documents, if they don't have this expensive programs suite on their computers. OpenOffice provides an excellent solution for all users, regardless of their preferred platforms. The package includes everything you need to create rich text documents, spreadsheets, slideshow presentations, drawings, databases and other projects. What's more, OpenOffice is offered completely free of charge and it is also open source.

When you launch OpenOffice, a dialog will present a series of options, for starting different types of projects, like documents, spreadsheets or others. Obviously, each option will bring up a different user interface, with specific options, for editing text, customizing slideshows and so on. You can start a similar or a different kind of project at any time, regardless of what interface you have on your screen, so there is no need to return to the startup window.

In terms of functionality, the included programs are similar to the MS Office components. The text editor provides a vast range of useful features, from simple ones, like changing font and paragraph settings to advanced ones, such as creating links, managing headings, working with tables and others. The core options can be found on toolbars, on the upper part of the interface, but you can find a series of tools on a panel, on the right side of the window.

The interface of the spreadsheet editor has a similar layout as the text editor, but you have to work on a table of contents, instead of a blank page. Besides inserting entries in each cell, the spreadsheet editor supports other operations as well, like calculating sums, generating functions, creating graphs and charts and more. Another useful tool is the slideshow editor. When you launch this tool, a wizard will help you make a series of initial configurations. You can start with a blank presentation or you can choose one of many templates and make other adjustments, like selecting or customizing a slide design, choosing default transition effects and speeds and so on.

The best part about OpenOffice is that is supports a wide range of file formats, including MS Office formats. It places numerous choices at your disposal when it comes to saving your work. You can save your projects as plain text files, as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and more.

Pros

You can work with text documents, spreadsheets, slideshow presentations, databases and other types of projects. The included programs work like the ones from the MS Office suite, but they are easier to use. Also, they provide support for numerous file formats, including MS Office formats.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to mention. Instead of paying for expensive word processors, spreadsheet or slideshow editors, you can use OpenOffice for the same purposes and make your work easier at the same time.
